“There is a lot that happens around the world we cannot control. We cannot stop earthquakes, we cannot prevent droughts, and we cannot prevent all conflict, but when we know where the hungry, the homeless, and the sick exist, then we can help” – Jan Schakowsky
People blessed with good fortune in life often look for ways to give back. Yet, the same is not often the case with individuals who come into money through sheer luck. Harboring the spirit of philanthropy with money that falls into your lap is a huge gesture. Roberto Mendoza is a perfect example of this.
Any person who cooks for the American President can be considered lucky. Roberto Mendoza has the distinction of cooking for four presidents (and counting). The El Salvador-born chef also has catering for the Academy Awards on his resume, along with working at the Beverly Hills Hotel in LA. His glittering career aside, Mendoza got lucky with his lottery ticket as well, winning a quarter of a million dollars.
Mr. Mendoza, with his remarkable achievements, is a successful man today. Yet, he comes from humble beginnings. Growing up in El Salvador during the 80s, with the country ravaged by war, he often had to struggle for food. He recalls the toughest time in his life, when he sometimes went to sleep without eating a morsel all day. During that time, he vowed that he would do everything in his power to eliminate starvation.
Now, every Saturday, he prepares food for the homeless in Charlotte, and also runs The Chef Heaven’s Kitchen, focused on raising money to help a village in the Dominican Republic. He owns a property in the village where he is building a cafeteria. The money he won through the lottery, around $175,000 after taxes, will go towards completing the project. That said, he is ready to raise additional money after building the facility to make it operational.
People who realize their good luck and blessings can truly make a change. Roberto Mendoza is a great role model for anyone who feels that a little care and compassion can go a long way towards alleviating the pain of the homeless and less privileged. At Sheltering Grace, we believe his effort deserves our encouragement and prayers.
