Backpacks for the Homeless: The Kindness Crew Calgary Society to Distribute Backpacks Filled with Essentials to the Homeless
“The holidays are a rough time for the homeless, but it’s a year-round problem we have to solve.” – Mike Binder
There isn’t a better time to spread some cheer and give back to the community than the holiday season. The homeless in particular have little, if any, reason to celebrate the festivities and get into the spirit of the season. Some organizations are trying to bring a smile to their lips by providing them essentials.
The Kindness Crew Calgary Society, operating out of southeast Calgary, Canada, works to source the items the clients of Mustard Seed need on a regular basis. 2018 proved a successful year for the crew and they managed to procure more items than they aimed for.
The goal for the Kindness Crew Calgary Society was creating 50 backpacks. However, they exceeded their target by almost 20%, making close to 60 backpacks. They also managed to double the number of benefactors. Usually, they have 50 donors on panel, but this year received help from 50 more people. Donors contributed in the form of cash, cards, and other useful items. Some people even donated their time and skills.
Anyone can join or donate to the group. Their only criteria is a shared love for humankind and a spirit to help those in need. This year, they aim to go one step further by donating to other organizations the items leftover after creating the backpacks.
At Sheltering Grace, we believe the holiday season is a time of joy for everyone, regardless of their social status. Even the homeless should get the chance to partake in the celebrations. All it takes is for the community to come together and put in some effort, so the homeless can find some relief during this holiday season.
Sheltering Grace Ministry, Ltd. is a 501(c)3 Ltd. non-profit ministry. We resolve the initial crisis of homelessness by providing a safe place to live during pregnancy and by providing mothers with the tools they need to improve decision-making, to enhance employment options, and increase family income, to act responsibly as the head of their household, and to develop the self-reliance to progress to permanent independent living. Please join us in renewing and rebuilding the lives of these brave women – #Be1of5000.
