Helping Hands Philadelphia: Celebrating the Spirit of Thanksgiving by Giving Back to the Community
“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey
The holiday season brings with it the spirit of celebration, joy, and thanksgiving. Unfortunately, not every family has the means to partake in the festivities. For them, a hand-to-mouth existence is a way of life. Thankfully, a few organizations are going the extra mile to engage the less privileged and share the happiness of Thanksgiving.
Helping Hands Philadelphia, in collaboration with Whole Foods, is planning the Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive. This year marks the third year of the initiative, with the goal of arranging turkey dinners for 200 families across Philly. Their aim is to source the turkeys locally, and also collect the other items required for preparing the dinner.
A key aspect of the drive is their eco-friendliness. Helping Hands Philadelphia takes special care with distribution, using only recyclable bags. The main areas the drive is targeting are Kensington and Point Breeze. The organization wants to engage the local residents, so they come together to give back to the community. They want the initiatives to extend beyond the Turkey Drive and also include educational and community events.
Local real estate developer, Streamline, is the main sponsor for the charity. Their mission is boosting urban renewal and giving back to the local communities which is a major step towards achieving their goal.
According to Sean Schellenger, the co-founder of Streamline, they want to be socially responsible and feel their business will grow through these initiatives.
At Sheltering Grace, we hope that every member of every community gets the chance to celebrate Thanksgiving, regardless of their current situation. The key is to engage the community and get people together. The power of the collective spells positive results, and this is evident in the Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive organized by Helping Hands Philadelphia. We should encourage them and also see this as an inspiration to give back to our local community.
Sheltering Grace Ministry, Ltd. is a 501(c)3 Ltd. non-profit ministry. We resolve the initial crisis of homelessness by providing a safe place to live during pregnancy and by providing mothers with the tools they need to improve decision-making, to enhance employment options, and increase family income, to act responsibly as the head of their household, and to develop the self-reliance to progress to permanent independent living. Please join us in renewing and rebuilding the lives of these brave women – #Be1of5000.
