“Housing is absolutely essential to human flourishing. Without stable shelter, it all falls apart.” – Matthew Desmond, American Sociologist
Research shows that in 2017 the homeless population in the US increased. This upward trend emerged after several years of homelessness being on a downward spiral. Homelessness is a social malaise that requires corrective action on a large scale. That said, even a small step can make a significant difference. KTGY Architecture + Planning, located in LA, concur. They are taking active steps to address this issue, via their R&D studio.
The team at the studio identified the root causes of the problem, including the rising cost of living. They came up with an innovative yet straightforward solution: re-purposing spaces already available. The growth of eCommerce and online retail sounded the death knell for big box stores. This resulted in numerous sprawling facilities that weren’t being used anymore.
Their initiative titled “Re-Habit” takes a unique approach. They divide the retail space into small sections. Next, they furnish the sections, converting them into restrooms and bedroom pods. What truly takes the cake is their end goal: they want to create self-sustaining living spaces including offices, training rooms, and other spaces. The residents will not only receive food and shelter, but also training and support, and will handle the chores necessary to keep the community functional.
KTGY has a prototype of the way they will re-purpose retail space to Re-Habit it. Their plans offer sufficient room for up to 20 beds, and the infrastructure accommodates up to 8 apartments on a floor. This innovative idea gives people who are down on their luck a safe and welcoming living space via Re-Habit.
At Sheltering Grace, we believe shelter is the most vital need after food. People working to combat homelessness need all the support we can offer. Re-Habit’s initiative shows how an out of the box solution can put a roof over a lot of people. You can do your part and support our cause to help homeless women and children.
