Help for Hurricane Florence Evacuees Comes From All Quarters

From Airlines to Airbnb Hosts – Help for Hurricane Florence Evacuees Comes From All Quarters

“Feed the hungry and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.” – Isaiah 58:10-11

It is heartwarming to see how we rush to the aid of our fellow humans in times of need. Whenever crisis strikes, we have known to rise up to the occasion and help others. As Hurricane Florence comes down hard on the Carolinas, the evacuees have been shown some much-needed generosity from different quarters. Here are five groups of people making life easier for those who need it most in the wake of Hurricane Florence.

Airlines – Free Baggage

Numerous airlines from American Airlines and United Airlines to Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines have waived baggage and pet fees for people traveling to and from affected cities.

U-Haul – Free storage

U-Haul businesses across the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia are offering free storage for people affected by the hurricane. This effort will help people meet the immediate need for secure locations.

Phone Carriers – Free Calls, Text and Data

AT&T and Verizon are offering texting, calling and data to their customers living in the most affected areas.

Magellan Health – Free Counseling

Magellan has opened up a toll-free crisis line (1-800-327-7451) for those affected by the hurricane and its effects. In addition to providing counseling services, they will direct people to local non-profits.

Airbnb Hosts – Free Accommodation

This isn’t the first time Airbnb hosts have opened their doors to hurricane victims. Over 200 hosts have made their homes available for free to Florence evacuees as well as relief workers. For people heading inland, campgrounds are also available.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency declared September 13th as the final day for evacuation. The above support will go a long way in helping people find a safe spot.

At Sheltering Grace Ministry, we work with women in difficult situations every day. Whether it is an actual storm or a metaphorical one that makes a person homeless, we know how invaluable any help can be in such situations.

Sheltering Grace Ministry, Ltd. is a 501(c)3 Ltd. non-profit ministry. We resolve the initial crisis of homelessness by providing a safe place to live during pregnancy and by providing mothers with the tools they need to improve decision-making, to enhance employment options, and increase family income, to act responsibly as the head of their household, and to develop the self-reliance to progress to permanent independent living. Please join us in renewing and rebuilding the lives of these brave women – #Be1of5000.
